10 Unforgettable girl groups from the 1980's




The 80's girl group didn't quite get the commercial success as their 90's sisters to follow but they definitely paved the way. With thanks to the success of girl groups such as the supremes and the runaways before them, girls groups were starting the make their way to the top of the charts.



The 80's were an interesting time in music and fashion sparking creativity which paid off, setting up the girls of the 90's to take out the millenium with a bang!!!!


Here 10 unforgettable girl groups of the 1980's :


1) Bananarama are a British group formed in 1981 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. The group made it into the guinness world records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world, hits include: "It ain't what you do...", "Really saying something", "shy boy", "Cruel summer", "venus", and "love in the first degree". Bananarama have released 10 studio albums to date, however, since 1991 Sara Dallin and Keren Woodward have been a duo.


2) The Bangles are an american pop rock band formed in 1981 by members Michael Steele (bass and vocal), Susanna Hoffs (vocals and rhythm guitar), Debbi Peterson (drums and vocals), and Vicki Peterson (Lead guitar and vocals). To date the group has released 5 studio albums, and several top 10s including number 1 hits "walk like an egyptian" and "Eternal flame" and number 2 hits "Hazy shade of winter" and "manic monday". In 1998 the group came back together to record a song for the soundtrack of Austin powers: spy who shagged me.


3) The go-go's are an american rock band formed in 1978 consisting of Belinda Carlisle (vocals), Jane wielder (guitar and vocals), Margot Olavarria (bass), Charlotte Caffey (lead guitar and keyboard), and Elissa Bello (drums). The Go-Go's had a short lived career in the 80s, releasing only 3 studio albums and splitting in 1985, however, in 1999 the girls came back together touring and in 2001 released their final album "God bless the Go-Go's". Hits include: "our lips are sealed", "we got the beat", "head over heals" and "turn to you".


4) Salt n Pepa are an american hip hop/rap group who formed in 1985 consisting of Cheryl James (Salt), Sandra Denton (Pepa), and Deidra Roper (DJ Spinderella). Salt n Pepa took the 80's and 90's by storm maintaining popularity today. They released 5 studio albums and several top 10s including: "Let's talk about sex", "push it", "shake your thang", twist and shout", "shoop", and "whatta man". The group disbanded in 2002 with Salt deciding she wanted nothing more to do with the music industry, however, the trio have been performing together since 2005, but haven't recorded any more albums to date.


5) Expose are an american latin freestyle group who formed in 1984 consisting of members Jeanette Jurado, Ann Curless and Gioia Bruno. The group became the first to have four top ten hits from their debut album. The group released 3 studio albums, including hits: "seasons change", "point of no return", "what you don't know", "when i looked at him", "tell me why", and "I'll never get over you getting over me". In 2015, Billboard magazine named the group the eighth most successful girl group of all time.


6) En Vogue is an american R&B/ pop group who formed in 1989 by members Terry Ellis, Dawn Robinson, Cindy Herron, and Maxine Jones. While En vogue's success was through the 90's, these ladies took out the 80's with a bang! To date the group has released 6 studio albums and several hit singles, including: "Hold on", "you don't have to worry", "lies", "don't go", "don't let go", and "whatever". Their latest album "electric cafe" was released earlier this year, so we have a lot to look forward to from En Vogue in the near future.


7) The pointer sisters are an american R&B group formed in 1974 formed by sisters June, Bonnie, Anita and Ruth Pointer. The group has been together over 4 decades and have included a diverse range of genres into their music, they have done pop, rock, jazz, blues, dance, country and more. In 1994 the sisters won 3 Grammy awards and received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. The group has released 7 studio albums and 14 hits including: "fairytale", "fire", "automatic", and "jump".


8) sister sledge is an american group formed in 1971 by sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. Daughters to broadway tap dancer Edwin Sledge and actress florez Sledge, the sisters were given vocal training by their grandmother Viola Williams, a former lyric soprano opera singer, and regularly sang at their families church. The group has released 10 studio albums and as well as several hits which include: "we are family", "he's the greatest dancer", "lost in music", "my guy", and "frankie".


9) The cover girls are an american group formed in 1986 consisting of members Louise Sabater, Caroline Jackson and Sunshine Wright. The girls released 4 studio albums with several hits which include: "show me", "because of you", "my heart skips a beat", "we can't go wrong", "funk boutique", and "Wishing on a star". In 2015 the girls featured in a documentary about freestyle music titled "Legends of freestyle".



10) Mary Jane Girls were an america R&B, soul and funk group formed in 1979, Protegees of singer Rick James. The name Mary Jane is Slang meaning Marijuana, being Rick James's drug of choice and the girls had an imaged styled as containing, Joanne "jojo" McDuffie leading vocals and streetwise, Candice Ghant the supermodel, cheri Wells the cheerleader/valley girl, and Kimberly Wuletich the dominatrix. The Mary Jane girls released only 2 studio albums with several hits including: "in my house", "all night long", "candy man", and "walk like a man".
