10 chart topping girl groups of the noughties



The girl group sailed through the new millennium smoothly, strongly dominating the charts through the early 2000’s, with fresh new groups, as well as, 90’s groups continuing on into the naughties. Groups from the 90’s include, the Spice Girls who released their final album “Forever” in November 2000, TLC released their fourth album, “3D” in November 2002, however, following the sudden death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, the group struggled as a duo. All Saints Also released their final album “Saints & Sinners” in October, 2002, just to name a few.


While girl groups from the 90’s continued into a new decade, new groups started to emerge and take their positions at the top of the charts. So, lets get straight into it, here are 10 chart topping girl groups of the noughties:





1) Destiny’s Child continued to dominate the charts into the naughties until their planned departure following the release of their final album, Destiny fulfilled. Members Beyonce Knowles, Kelly Rowland, and Michelle Williams released their third studio album, Survivor, in 2001 containing worldwide hits "Independent Women", "Survivor" and "Bootylicious" Billboard magazine ranks the group as one of the greatest musical trios of all time and the ninth most successful artist/band of the 2000s.


In 2002, they announced the group would be taking a break but two years later reunited for the release of their fourth and final studio album, Destiny Fulfilled in 2004, with four new singles "Lose My Breath", "Soldier", "Cater 2 U" and "Girl". The girls still perform together at events, while Kelly and Michelle often feature alongside Beyonce at event and in video clips. Destiny's Child has sold more than sixty million records worldwide to date.



2) The Pussycat dolls are an American girl group and dance ensemble, founded in Los Angeles, California, by choreographer Robin Antin in 1995 as a burlesque troupe. in 2003 the group was turned into a music franchise comprising Nicole Scherzinger, Carmit Bachar, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, Melody Thornton, and Kimberly Wyatt. The group's debut album, “PCD”, was released in September 2005 featuring, lead single, "Don't Cha", which was a commercial success, topping the charts worldwide, and reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100, second single, "Stickwitu", "Beep", "Buttons" "I Don't Need a Man" and "Wait a Minute".


Their second Album “Doll Domination”, was released on September 23, 2008, with "When I Grow Up" as the lead single, as well as "Whatcha Think About That", "I Hate This Part", and "Bottle Pop". In April 2009, Scherzinger confirmed to Billboard that the album would be re-released featuring two new hits "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" and Europop remix of "Hush Hush" retitled "Hush Hush; Hush Hush".




3) The Sugarbabes are a British girl group whose members include Siobhan Donaghy, Mutya Buena and Heidi Range, former member of fellow English girl group Atomic Kitten. Their debut album, “One Touch”, was released on the 27 November 2000., The group's debut single, "Overload", peaked at number 6, the album produced three more top 40 hits "New Year", "Run for Cover" and "Soul Sound". The group's second album, “Angels with Dirty Faces”, which featured "Freak like Me" scored the group their first UK number 1 single, "Round Round" which also debuted on top of the UK Singles Chart, "Stronger" and "Angels with Dirty Faces".


The group's third album, “Three”, was released in late 2003 and reached number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, earning the group a BRIT Award nomination for Best Album which Certified double platinum, and has sold 855,000 copies to date. Their fourth album “Taller in More Ways” became the group's first UK number 1 album, featuring their thirteenth single, "Push the Button" in October 2005, the song debuted at number 1 in the UK and remained in the position for three consecutive weeks.




4) Atomic Kitten are a British pop group formed in Liverpool in 1998 whose members are Natasha Hamilton, Jenny Frost and Liz McClarnon. The group's debut album “Right Now” was released in October 2000 and peaked at number 39 in the UK, featuring debut single, "Right Now","See Ya", and "Whole Again". "Whole Again" went on to become the group's most successful single, staying at number one for four weeks in the UK, 6 weeks in Germany and number one in 19 other countries, eventually becoming the 13th best-selling single of the 2000s and the number one first dance wedding song of its generation.


To date the group have had three UK number-one singles: "Whole Again", the fourth-best-selling song of all time by a girl group in the UK; "Eternal Flame", a song originally recorded by The Bangles; and "The Tide Is High (Get the Feeling)", a song originally recorded by The Paragons and by Blondie, They have sold over 10 million records worldwide.



5) Bardot formed in 1999 on the Australian reality television series Popstars, which aired in early 2000. Members Belinda Chapple, Sophie Monk, Sally Polihronas Katie Underwood and Tiffany Wood (now spelled Tiffani Wood) were selected on the Seven Network's first series of Popstars, a talent show which set about producing a five-piece girl group (we need this show again).


Exposure from the show resulted in the instant success of their debut single "Poison" and debut album Bardot, their second album “Play It Like That” released in 2001, featured the Top 5 ARIA singles "ASAP" and "I Need Somebody". Parting ways in 2002, Bardot remains the most successful act of all four Australian Popstars seasons.




6) Blaque were an american group signed to Lisa “left eye” Lopes’s production company, Left Eye Productions. Their debut album “Blaque” sold more than 1 million copies and was certified Platinum, the album included the Gold-selling single "808", the international hit "Bring It All to Me", and a third single, "I Do". In 2000, members Natina Reed, Shamari Fears and Brandi Williams starred as cheerleaders in the film Bring It On and recorded the Shelly Peiken and Guy Roche song "As If" for the soundtrack that same year.


A remixed version of the Blaque song "Bring It All To Me" appeared in the film, featuring 50 Cent. Their second album “Blaque Out”, was set for release in 2001, but was shelved as the group was dropped from Columbia Records. After Lopes's death in 2002, they signed with Elektra Records and began work on their third album “Torch”. Torch contained the single “I’m good” which appeared on the soundtrack to the movies Honey, however Torch was never released. On October 26, 2012, Reed died after being hit by a car near Atlanta, Georgia. The group broke up shortly after her death.




7) Mis-Teeq was a British girl group, consisting of lead singer Sabrina Washington, rapper, singer and songwriter Alesha Dixon and singer Su-Elise Nash. The group released their debut album “Lickin' on Both Sides” on 27 October 2001, which became a platinum success and sold more than 300,000 copies in the UK.


The album included debut single “why”, “all I want”, international hit “one night stand”, “roll on” and the cover of Montell Jordans, “this is how we do it”. Mis-Teeq released their second album, Eye Candy on the 29 March 2003, While sales failed to link on the sudden success of “Lickin' on Both Sides”, pre-released lead single "Scandalous" became the group's most successful single reaching number 2 in the UK and top 10 in Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, and Denmark. "Scandalous" reached number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June, making it their only single to chart in the US, the group split follow their record labels bankruptcy.




8) Girls Aloud are an English-Irish pop group, which was created through the ITV talent show Popstars: The Rivals in 2002. The groups members Cheryl, Nadine, Sarah, Nicola and Kimberley released their winning single "Sound of the Underground" after the shows finale, the song spent four consecutive weeks at number one and was certified platinum in March 2003.


Their debut album “Sound of the Underground” was released in May 2003, entering the charts at number two and certified platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. The album contained singles "No Good Advice", "Life Got Cold", and a cover version of the Pointer Sisters 1980s dance hit "Jump". Girls Aloud recorded a further four studio albums which included hits "The Show", "Love Machine", "Long Hot Summer", "Whole Lotta History", and "Sexy! No No No...". On the 20 March 2013, the group announced their split on Twitter.




9) Dream is an American pop group, whose biggest success came in 2000 with their track, "He Loves U Not". The group was originally formed in October 1998 when a talent scout went in search for four teens from California, to comprise a new girl group, ultimately Holly Blake-Arnstein (13), Melissa Schuman (14), Ashley Poole (13), and Alex Chester (13) were selected.


Their debut single, "He Loves U Not" peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, their second single, "This Is Me", enjoyed a fair amount of success as well with the music video hitting number 1 on TRL. They had planned to release two more singles from their debut album "Miss You" and "In My Dreams" however, the singles were never released. According to Arnstein, this was partly due to the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001. Their debut album, “It Was All a Dream”, was released on January 23, 2001 and Their second album “Reality”, was recorded but its release kept being postponed, Dreams disbandment was never formally announced.




10) 3LW were an American group who released a number of modest hits throughout their career. 3LW meaning 3 little women, consisted of members Adrienne Bailon, Kiely Williams, and Naturi Naughton whos self-titled debut album, 3LW was released on December 5, 2000. Their debut single, "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)", was released on October 3, 2000, followed by hits "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right)" and "Playas Gon' Play” The album went on to be certified platinum by the RIAA, selling 1.3 million copies.


In response to the 9/11 attacks 3LW recorded a song with various artists including Michael Jackson, Frankie J, Usher, Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Luther Vandross, Céline Dion, Britney Spears and Mariah Carey called "What More Can I Give". As the release of their second album was approaching Naturi Naughton left the group leaving them a duo, and a third album they worked on fell through due to the remaining members involvement with disney's cheetah girls.
